Shop Smart educational resources

Introduction
These educational resources about consumer-related topics have been developed by teachers for teachers as part of the National Consumer Agency's national educational initiative.
The initiative is aimed at secondary school students in order to raise their awareness about their consumer rights and to support the school curriculum where it deals with consumer-related issues.
The resources are curriculum focused and are for use in Business Studies and Home Economics, Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme and Transition Year modules, and to a lesser extend CSPE.
Each of the seven lessons is largely self-contained, so teachers can tailor their lesson plans depending on the subject they are teaching.

What the teachers say... "I am a teacher for 10 years at Rockwell College, Cashel, teaching Business and Maths. I have recently become involved with the SLSS in the area of Business. As a result of this and my interest in active learning I became involved in writing this resource for the NCA. "I believe that this resource will prove both interesting and engaging to all students irrespective of their academic ability. It examines areas relevant to their everyday life and equips them with knowledge that will help them as consumers." - Dermot Brislane "I am a teacher of Business and LCVP at Malahide Community School and formerly taught in Greendale Community School, Kilbarrack. I'm a member of the National Executive of the Business Studies Teachers Association of Ireland (BSTAI) - www.bstai.ie - and have co-authored several resources which are used in TY and Senior Cycle Business. "I was invited to get involved in the project due to my experience in using active-learning methodologies and co-operative learning in the classroom. "We've tried to make the resources as easy to use as possible for both teachers and students, and hope that they can complement the syllabus for JC and LC Business students. Multimedia games and resources as well as practical and familiar examples have been used throughout to actively engage students and ensure that they become knowledgeable consumers who are aware of the rights." -Siobhán O'Sullivan |
'Shop Smart' educational game
The "Shop Smart" game is an integral component of these new teaching resources.
It's set in a virtual shopping centre where players can test their consumer knowledge of everyday shopping scenarios, from buying the latest video game to returning faulty goods.
