How your business/organisation can support the ‘Scam Savvy’ campaign
28 March 2011
The ‘Scam Savvy’ public awareness campaign is being launched by the National Consumer Agency to coincide with April 1, April Fool's Day. There are three main ways that your organisation can show your support for the campaign on Facebook, Twitter and/or the Web.
Remember that the aim is to have a viral campaign which encourages as many staff and customers as possible to take part in the conversation and to share their knowledge and experience of scams.
1. On Facebook...
If your organisation has a presence on Facebook, you can add a message to your Facebook page. The following is suggested wording for either a short message or a slightly longer one - feel free to customise it:
Get scam savvy! April Fools Day is here, but you needn’t be the fool by falling for a scam. Learn more about the common scams and how to avoid them. Scams are schemes designed to con you out of your cash or personal financial details, like your bank account details, PIN numbers or internet banking login information. Scams can take many forms, from fake lotteries, pyramid schemes and other "get rich quick" deals, to identity theft and bank card skimming. [insert your organisation's name] are supporting the National Consumer Agency's scams awareness campaign, to help consumers to become more scam savvy - learn more and take a scams straw poll. |
The above two links both go to the NCA's Facebook page and straw poll about the campaign at http://www.facebook.com/pages/National-Consumer-Agency/131595511841?v=app_182815018427107
Besides promoting the campaign, get your staff and customers to take part - by:
- Taking the straw poll on the NCA’s Facebook page, to share their views on scams
- Posting their own messages on the NCA’s Facebook page, sharing their stories and experiences about being scammed or avoiding scams
2. On your website...
Again, feel free to use the above messages on your website (or create your own) to promote the campaign in your site’s news section, email newsletters etc.
3. On Twitter...
On your organisation's Twitter feed, give a link to the campaign on Facebook, such as:

Use the #scamsavvy hash-tag to follow updates on Twitter about the campaign and to find messages that you can retweet, or go to http://twitter.com/#!/search/%23scamsavvy
Again, encourage your staff and customers to take part in the conversation and to tell others about how to avoid scams.

You are also free to use the following logo on your website or Facebook page to promote the campaign (image is in JPG or GIF format, in web-friendly resolution). Download the ‘Be Scam Savvy’ logo:
Background and further information
The aims of the "Scam Savvy" campaign are to:
- Raise consumers' awareness about the growing incidences of scams and how to avoid them
- Get consumers to discuss and share their own experiences on scams
- Involve leading businesses and organisations which have to deal with the consequences of many of these scams in building awareness
The NCA is asking businesses and organisations such as yours with a common interest in promoting scams awareness to support the campaign - and use your own online presence to help highlight scams awareness.
